Neuro-Orthopaedics relates to disorders, injuries and malformations of
the spine. Neuro-Orthopaedics deals with the diagnosis, treatment and
rehabilitation of spinal problems. The diagnostic aspects cover
neurology, clinical neurophysiology and imaging of the spine and the
spinal nervous system. Another important aspect is the treatment
either with surgical or conservative methods. Neuro-Orthopaedics
covers the field of rehabilitation as well. Neuro-Orthopaedics
includes new technology such as minimally invasive surgery, computer
assisted surgery and the development of new devices in spinal
instrumentation and functional stabilization. Today and increasingly
in the future, the costs of various treatments have to be considered.
Neuro-Orthopedics favors a multidisciplinary approach to spinal
disorders and encompasses skills from orthopaedics, neurosurgery,
traumatology, neurology, rheumatology, rehabilitation, clinical
neurophysiology, neuroradiology, anatomy and biomechanics. It is hoped
that the field of Neuro-Orthopaedics will contribute to the refinement
of knowledge and techniques and will stimulate further research and
progress in the entire field of spinal treatment.
